In the citizen-owned era, The Heritage Society founded the 1886 Lunchroom, which thrived for over 20 years under the care and hospitality of its members. Stocked with recipes from the hotel’s storied past—including contributions from Neiman Marcus culinary director and “duchess of Texas cuisine” Helen Corbitt—alongside treasured family recipes, the ladies of the Heritage Society created a gathering place so beloved it became known as Austin’s socializing parlor. Honoring both the city and the Heritage Society’s legacy, the 1886 Café & Bakery opened its doors on July 4, 2002.Today, nestled along 6th Street in downtown Austin, the 1886 Café & Bakery remains a cherished local landmark and go-to bakery for Austinites and visitors alike. The charming Victorian-style café serves comforting Texas favorites that blend time-honored recipes with a modern touch. Guests can enjoy fresh home-baked pastries and classics like migas, huevos rancheros, our signature Texas-Shaped Waffle, 1886 Burger, sandwiches, salads, and a reimagined version of the iconic 1886 Chocolate Cake.
